Welcome to the Fishing Job Guide!

Whether you're looking for a relaxing way to spend your time, hoping to make some extra money, or aiming to become a true master angler, fishing offers plenty of opportunities to explore. The fishing system allows you to fish from the shore or from a boat, discover different species across Los Santos and Blaine County, improve your Fishing Rank, upgrade your equipment, and even take part in commercial fishing. Fishing is more than simply casting a line - where, when, and how you fish can make a big difference.

HOW TO START AND WORK

Starting your fishing journey is quite simple. Before you can actually cast your line and start catching fish, you need to get yourself the necessary equipment. First of all, you need to purchase a Fishing Rod. Without one, you will not be able to start fishing. You can purchase fishing equipment at any Hardware Store(image.png). There are 4 Hardware Stores available on the map: (Davis, Paleto Bay, Harmony, Sandy Shores). Once you arrive at the Hardware Store, you can purchase your Fishing Rod and other fishing equipment in a Fishing Gear category. A fish bucket is also required for fishing. Make sure you purchase one before heading out to your fishing spot. Using bait is completely optional. You can fish without bait, so it is not required to start fishing. However, bait makes the process faster and more efficient by reducing the waiting time for a bite and preventing fish from slipping off a bare hook.

ROD WHAT DECIDES WHAT BITES?

What you catch depends on several factors, so choosing the right time, place, and conditions can make a big difference.

Time of day plays a major role. Different species prefer different times - dawn (05:00–08:00), daytime, dusk (17:00–20:00), or night (20:00–05:00). Dawn and dusk generally give you the fastest bites, while midday is the slowest. Night-only species are mainly active during the night, and legendary night fish are extremely unlikely to bite during daylight.

Weather also affects what you can catch. Rain and storms increase your chances of finding rare, super rare, and legendary fish, with storms giving the strongest boost. Fog is especially helpful for rare fish, while clear weather offers the most standard fishing conditions. Your location matters too. Fishing from a pier gives you access to shore, estuary, and reef species, while fishing from a boat also allows you to reach open-water species. Deep-water species require both a boat and a Tournament or Deep-Sea rod, and they are much more common in the Deep Pacific.

The fish stock of an area can also affect your results. Each region has a live stock level that changes over time. Fishing nets reduce the stock, while time allows it to recover. When an area becomes fished out, bites become slower and you’ll catch fewer common fish. Bait makes a big difference to bite speed. With bait, a bite usually takes around 12–38 seconds. Without bait, it takes around 30–95 seconds, and there is also a 50% chance for the fish to slip off the bare hook.

Finally, your fishing level determines which fish you can catch. Rarer fish tiers are locked behind the level requirement, so levelling up will open access to better catches.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR FISHING ROD

There are several different rods available, and which one you use is completely up to you. Each rod has different capabilities, including the maximum fish weight it can handle and how wide your catch window will be during the fishing minigame. The Fishing Rod is enough to get started, while the more advanced rods allow you to catch heavier and more difficult fish.

WHERE TO GO FISHING?

Once you have all the necessary equipment, you're ready to start fishing! You can fish almost anywhere where there is water, so you don't necessarily have to travel to a specific fishing spot. However, choosing the right location can make a big difference in your fishing experience. Some locations may currently be more active and give you better chances of catching fish. Before choosing where to fish, it is recommended to use /fishstats

This will show you the currently popular fishing location. These locations change occasionally (every hour) and If you're within 60 metres of the active Hotspot, you will receive a notification in chat, so it's worth checking the command before you start your fishing session. Once you've checked the current location, head there, find a suitable spot near the water, and get ready to cast your line!

Fishing at the Hotspot gives you several advantages:

  • 🎣 Bites come 40% faster

  • 🐟 Rarer fish are more likely to appear

  • 💰 Fish sell for 15% more

  • ⭐ Fishing XP is increased by 1.5×

image.png

The /fishstatsmenu contains useful information about your fishing progress and the current fishing situation. There you can check your:

  • Total number of fish caught

  • Fishing experience and current level

  • Total amount earned from fishing

  • Fish collected, separated by rarity

  • Available markets where you can sell your catch

  • Current popular fishing location

MAP ICONS & SALES

There are 3 different markets where you can sell the fish you catch. Each market is marked on the map with a different icon.

DESCRIPTION

INFORMATION

Fish icon, white, with a light blue ring on the ground (image.png)

Named fishing spot (pier or shore)

Del Perro Pier, Paleto Bay Pier, Elysian Island Docks, Chumash Beach, Alamo Sea Shore, Cassidy Creek. You do not have to fish here (see section 3) but one of them is the hotspot each hour

Fish market icon with a green ring on the ground (image.png)

Fish market (legal)

Del Perro and Paleto Bay. Buys every fish and crate. Protected species are confiscated here.

Smuggler's Dock (black market)

On the Alamo Sea. Buys everything including protected species at full price. Selling here is the illegal route.

Once you’ve finished fishing, there are several places where you can sell your catch. Fish markets pay you in cash for each fish based on its value, including the base price, skill bonus, perfect catch bonus, and hotspot bonus. They also buy fish crates.

You can also sell fish and crates to restaurants, bars, cafes, and bakeries, where they are used as kitchen ingredients. To make a sale, simply stand inside a business that has staff on duty and use /sellproduce <total price>. The staff member can then accept or decline your offer. If the sale is accepted, the money will be paid directly into your bank account. Keep in mind that protected fish cannot be sold to businesses! Not sure what you’re carrying? Use /bucket to check your current catch and see how much everything is worth.

FISHING MINIGAME

When a fish bites, you have 4 seconds to press E or use /fish to start the catch. A fishing panel will appear with a vertical track, the fish moving up and down, a green catch window, a progress bar, and a line-tension bar.

image.png

Hold SPACE, W, or the mouse button to move the green window upward. Release the button to let it move back down. Your goal is to keep the fish inside the green window for as long as possible.

While the fish is inside the window, your progress increases. If the fish escapes the window, progress starts to drain. Keep an eye on the line tension as well - reeling while the fish is outside the window puts extra strain on the line. If the tension reaches the red zone, ease off to avoid snapping it. Fish will eventually tire out, making them easier to control as the fight continues.

Catch results:

  • Perfect Catch: Keep the fish inside the window for most of the fight without heavily straining the line. Earn 1.5× fish value and 1.4× XP.

  • Caught: Fill the progress bar to successfully land the fish and receive its normal value.

  • Lost: If the progress bar reaches zero, the fish gets away.

  • Snapped: If the tension reaches its limit, the line breaks. Try using a stronger reel or applying less pressure next time.

Fish & Equipment:

Rarer and heavier fish are generally harder to catch. They fight harder, move more unpredictably, and stay active for longer. Your equipment can make the fight easier. Better rods give you a wider catch window, while better reels increase the rate at which progress fills and allow you to handle more line tension.

FISHING RANKS & PROGRESSION

Fishing has its own level from level 1 to level 25. Your fishing level increases by catching fish and earning Fishing XP.

The amount of XP you receive depends on the fish's rarity:

  • Common: 4 XP

  • Uncommon: 9 XP

  • Rare: 22 XP

  • Super Rare: 60 XP

  • Legendary: 140 XP

  • Protected: 110 XP

INFO: A Perfect Catch gives 1.4× XP, while fishing during the hourly hotspot gives 1.5× XP

Fishing levels:

Your fishing level also affects how much you earn at fish markets. Each level increases your market payout by 2%, up to a maximum of +50% at level 25. You need approximately 25,000 XP+ in total to reach level 25. Your current level and progress can be viewed using /fish stats

Higher levels also unlock new fish rarities:

  • Level 3: Uncommon

  • Level 8: Rare

  • Level 10: Protected

  • Level 14: Super Rare

  • Level 20: Legendary

image.png

RARITY TIERS & YOUR CATCH

There are 233 fish species to discover, divided into 6 rarity tiers: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Super Rare, Legendary, and Protected.

Each fish you catch becomes an item in your inventory, showing its weight, length, and value. The rarer the fish, the more valuable the catch. When someone catches a Legendary fish, the catch is announced across the whole city.

Some examples of each tier:

  • Common: Sardine, Bluegill

  • Uncommon: Largemouth Bass, Lingcod

  • Rare: Chinook Salmon, Yellowfin Tuna

  • Super Rare: Blue Marlin, Mako Shark

  • Legendary: Chiliad Lake Monster, Storm Marlin

  • Protected: Sea Turtle, Great White Pup

⚠️ Protected species cannot be legally sold. Legal fish markets will confiscate protected fish, while the Smuggler's Dock will pay their full value.

NETS & COMMERCIAL FISHING

Commercial fishing requires a tugboat and a trawl net. Once you're at the helm, use /net deploy to deploy the net and begin trawling. Keep the tug moving at a steady 5–30 km/h for at least 2 minutes and 300 metres of distance. For a full haul, you’ll need to cover 600 metres. You can check your current progress and the area's fish stock with /net status. When you're ready to bring the net in, use /net haul. If you want to stop without completing the haul, use /net cancel. Leaving the helm will also cut the net loose.

Your haul depends on several factors, including the region, available fish stock, time of day, weather, and how far you trawl. The Deep Pacific and Paleto provide the best catches, while creeks have little to no yield. Caught fish are brought up as crates, sorted by species, with up to 25 fish per crate. Each fish is worth roughly 75% of its normal rod-caught value.

Be prepared for some bycatch as well. You may occasionally pull up a rare fish - or even a Protected fish, which can cause problems if you're caught carrying it.

Every haul reduces the fish stock in the area. Stock gradually recovers over several hours, so repeatedly fishing the same waters can eventually leave them nearly empty. Finally, keep an eye on your equipment - a trawl net lasts for around 40 hauls before it needs to be replaced.
